New Jersey Updates Its Construction Code
New Jersey has updated its construction code by adopting the 2024 version of the Uniform Construction Code (UCC). This adoption, effective August 17, 2026, incorporates the 2024 International Building Code (IBC), the 2024 National Electrical Code (NEC), the 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC), and the 2024 National Standard Plumbing Code (NSPC), and transitions New Jersey into the 2024 model code cycle. Notable changes include: updated standards related to wind, snow, and seismic structural loads; energy efficiency requirements of HVAC systems, electrical systems, and exterior wall assemblies; standards for batteries and energy storage technologies; and requirements for fire protection and life-safety provisions.
The enactment incorporates a 6-month transition period during which applicants for construction permits can still seek review under the previous code edition. Consequently, for projects that are currently in the design phase, immediate attention should be given to the changes and development of a plan for permit submission is critical.
