ECONOMIC MINDS MEET TO DISCUSS CHALLENGES AFFECTING CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT INDUSTRIES IN NEW YORK

Special McGraw Hill Construction & Zetlin De Chiara Seminar Held to Navigate Economic Challenges

November 26, 2008 (New York, NY) The region’s best economic minds came together recently for a special forum sponsored by McGraw Hill Construction and Zetlin & De Chiara LLP, one of the region’s premier construction law firms. Michael S. Zetlin, founding partner of Zetlin & De Chiara, the program’s moderator, along with founding partner Michael K. De Chiara joined with McGraw Hill Construction to bring leading industry experts to the table to explore market challenges and opportunities following the collapse of Wall Street at a special seminar entitled “What’s Next for New York’s Regional Construction and Development Markets.”

The panel included Richard Ravitch, partner, Ravitch, Rice & Co., Robert Lieber, NYC Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Michael Horodniceanu, President, MTA Capital Construction and James Parrott, Chief Economist, Fiscal Policy Institute, who provided their insights and knowledge about the construction and development of New York as it is affected by the economic instability observed in recent months.

The forum explored the impact of the failing economy on the region’s real estate and construction market from a variety of business perspectives. The program focused on the effect the current economy will have on private residential, commercial markets and retail markets as well as the public sector. A special emphasis on infrastructure and recommendations for infrastructure financing were also included.

“By all accounts,” concluded Michael Zetlin, “solutions to the current economic crisis will rest on an individual company’s ability to innovate and respond quickly to a changing market.” “That may translate into exploring new markets such as infrastructure and energy, implementing better ways to do business and staying positive in a turbulent economy.”

Richard Ravitch, who also chairs the Governor’s Commission on MTA Financing, noted that “in every economic cycle, the best development decisions were made when the market was at its lowest. While the market is challenging, there are still important opportunities for development and construction.”
